The Mystery K9 Illness

What is it, and how to recognize it?

ree

In recent months, a new doggy pandemic, Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC), has swept the nation, causing vets to scratch their heads!

While research is still ongoing about this mysterious disease, here's what we do know:

  • It mimics kennel cough, so watch out for these symptoms. (lingering cough, weakness, runny nose/eyes, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing, etc.)

  • It's highly contagious.

The best way to protect your dog against CIRDC is to keep their vaccines current. Vaccines reduce the chance of your dog becoming ill and make your dog less likely to develop severe disease or spread infection to other dogs.

There isn't a cause for panic (please don't let it be another 2020!), but

  • Play it safe. Limit your dog's interaction with other dogs—there are huge groups of dogs with unknown health or vaccination statuses—and wash your hands after handling other dogs to avoid spreading infection.

  • Keep your dog away from toys, food, and water bowls from dogs outside your household.

  • Stay informed!
