Previously, we barked about the value of pet health insurance and its potential benefits for our beloved pets. After sharing Athena's story and considering her lifestyle, I realized that pet health insurance was not just a financial investment but a source of peace of mind. As her fur mom, knowing that she had access to the best care was invaluable. However, navigating the world of pet health insurance can be overwhelming.

When researching the correct type of pet health insurance, consider your pet's lifestyle. For example, Athena was an adventure pup! She attended doggy daycare, went hiking, camping, watersports, and more, which means she was susceptible to catching germs or having injuries.

Understanding the various types of pet health insurance is crucial when deciding. There are three main types: Wellness and Preventative Care, Comprehensive (Accident and Illness), and Accident-only (Emergency Plans). Each type offers different levels of coverage, so it's essential to review what each policy includes to ensure it meets your pet's needs.

Wellness & Preventative Care

Wellness plans cover your pets' routine check-ups, vaccinations, and preventatives such as flea, tick, and heartworm. Depending on the preventive care plan level, it can also cover annual blood work, x-rays, and dental cleanings.

Comprehensive Care (Accident & Illness)

Comprehensive plans cover unforeseen situations such as ear infections, tummy aches, bladder infections, stubbed toe beans, sprained ankles, and torn ACLs. These plans are ideal for breed-specific medical conditions such as allergies, diabetes, or cancer. Read the fine print, however, because most plans will not cover "pre-existing" medical conditions.

Accident-only (Emergency Plans)

Accident-only plans will cover "911" type pet injuries such as broken bones, bite wounds, or poisoning. These plans are more affordable than a comprehensive plan since it does not cover illnesses. This plan is ideal for healthy fur babies who are more clumsy or mischievously curious.

When choosing a policy for your pet, it's essential to compare the coverages based on your pet's health and lifestyle. Consider factors such as deductibles, limits, and monthly premiums. Doing so can ensure that you're making the best decision for your pet's health and well-being.

For Athena, having pet health insurance was worth it, and ensuring her access to care was a significant part of living her best life.
