Toxic plants poisonous to pets.
We're in full Spring, and the flowers are blooming, the gardeners are gardening, and there are so many sniffs to be had!Â
But before letting our puppies explore the world, it's important to remember that some of the most beautiful flora can harm our beloved pets. If you suspect your pet has wandered into a potentially dangerous area, don't hesitate to contact your veterinarian immediately.Â
Here is a list of common plants popular in South Carolina that we often see during our walks and are considered toxic to your fur babies:
Sago Palm: This is a trendy plant around homes, a true symbol of 'Lake Life.' However, this beauty harbors a dark secret—it's toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.Â
Causes:Â Vomiting, melena, icterus, increased thirst, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, bruising, coagulopathy, liver damage, liver failure, and death.
Azalea:Â We see these lovely bushes often around apartment homes and up against houses, but they are toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.
Causes:Â Vomiting (not in horses), diarrhea, weakness, cardiac failure.
Tulips:Â These colorful and beautiful additions to our gardens and landscapes are often found near mailboxes or around trees. Their bulbs contain the highest concentration of toxins.
Causes:Â Vomiting, depression, diarrhea, hypersalivation.
Lilies:Â We don't see lilies often during our walks, but they are a popular addition to bouquets! They offer a lovely fragrance, but their pollen gets everywhere like glitter! It is highly toxic to cats, which causes kidney failure.
